From listed buildings and conservation areas to inner city gap sites and areas of outstanding natural beauty; I work with developers and homeowners to find viable, creative solutions, along with a route to getting those solutions built.

I also work with hospitality and wellness brands wanting to leverage commercial spaces for maximum benefit to themselves and their communities.

Choosing the right team

Building anything is an enormous invesment; of time, energy, effort, finances and carbon. It’s complex, with several possible routes you could choose to go down. It also comes with social and environmental responsibility to build something that has purpose, longevity and doesn’t require replacement or demolition within a few decades.

The awkward and overlooked are where I thrive. They present incredible opportunities to those willing to leverage the latent potential through progressive models and lateral approaches. Ultimately creating places people enjoy spending time; for as long as possible.

Bethan is an architect, interior designer and consultant focussed on longevity, sustainability and financial viability of new build and retrofit projects.

Design is used as a strategic tool to improve the operational, atmospheric and technical performance of each building. Bethan’s extensive skillset allows her to leverage design intelligence and commercial understanding as well as technical insight and strategic decision making in order to help create places that people gravitate towards.

Previous experience includes delivering independent hospitality and high-end residential projects from concept to completion; undertaking workspace and residential projects with Native Land, Persimmon Homes and Renaker; along with collaborating on exhibitons for MoMA NYC, Vitra Design Museum and MAS Antwerpen.

An insight into the process
of working together.

RIBA Stage 0

I initially look to conduct a few hours consultation, no strings, early stage highlights on what could be possible and what to consider. The goal is to solidify your requirements, outline a business case and appraise any potential sites or buildings.

RIBA Stage 1

This is where the bones of the project are sculpted. I’ll typically run a workshop to produce a project plan which defines what spatial, quality and sustainability outcomes the project is looking to achieve, what outputs are feasible for the site/building, and how the project will look to achieve those outputs.

RIBA Stage 2

Here is where the ideas form. Creating the concept, reviewing the design, engaging with engineers, planners and quantity surveyors to ensure the strategy and approach is aligned.

RIBA Stage 3

Spaces are coordinated, outlined and costed. The design is pushed and tested to ensure it meets the needs and requirements of the brief and the users of the space.

RIBA Stage 4

Then we get into the depths of the details, developing a package of information for contractors to build from, finalising specifications and ensuring compliance with building regulations.

RIBA Stage 5

The project starts on site. Building contracts are administeres, progress is monitored and quality is inspected. At the end of this stage, the building is completed and ready to use.

RIBA Stage 6

There is an aftercare stage where any defects are rectified, performance is reviewed and final certificate is issued.

RIBA Stage 7

Something of a health check is conducted to verify the outcomes of the project, update any safety files and building manuals.

Every project is different and my role isn’t essential for each stage.
